The payouts, disclosed underneath freedom of knowledge legal guidelines, provoked anger from jail officers.
One instructed The Solar: “Jail guards have such a troublesome job and to say they’re the dangerous guys is simply insulting.”
The figures don’t embrace the 14 privately run prisons in England and Wales.
Mick Pimblett of the Jail Officers Affiliation described English prisons as “probably the most harmful place to work in Western Europe”.
He added: “Though the federal government claims it’s growing the variety of jail officers, the quantity they’re recruiting is nowhere close to the quantity leaving jail.
“It’s a doom-loop.
“Prisoners should be locked up longer, with little or no exercise.
“When they’re pissed off, they turn into violent.
“Jail officers should be supplied with extra PPE, together with improved staffing, to allow them to shield themselves and the prisoners.”
The Jail Service mentioned it had efficiently defended two-thirds of the claims.
