5.5 magnitude earthquake reported off Northern California’s coast


A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck waters outdoors of Northern California on Sunday, in accordance with america Geological Survey (USGS).

USGS stated the earthquake was reported at round 11:45 a.m. on Sunday. It was detected 63 miles west of Petrolia and 74 miles southwest of Eureka.

The epicenter of the earthquake was within the Pacific Ocean. Officers say the depth of the earthquake was round 1.3 miles.

USGS’s ShakeMap recorded the earthquake’s epicenter at 6.8 on the Modified Mercalli Depth Scale, however that depth was not felt onshore – the USGS reported that the depth in Petrolia was a 3.7.

The Modified Mercalli Depth Scale, a scale that measures the depth of earthquakes, considers something between 6 and seven as “sturdy.”
